School Visit: Grandview Elementary

Grandview Elementary in Livonia, Michigan is a school of superheroes. Charlie and I should know. We saw the proof. We visited the school on March 5, 2012. Pictures of superheroes adorn the walls inside and out. In one rendering, even the principal is depicted wearing a costume! The gym teacher, on the other hand, goes all out by wearing an actual Supergirl t-shirt while she leads class. The students also get into the heroic act. They’re reading heroes, of course, and they write and draw superhero comics from A to Z (shown below). Coincidence? I think not.

Thank you to superhero Media Specialist Lisa Piontek for inviting us, and thank you to all the heroes on the faculty who coordinated and planned our delicious lunch in the teacher’s lounge. Real heroes read!

  1. HOW MANY SCHOOLS DID YOU VIST AND DID YOU DO THE SAME THING FOR EACH ONE?

    • Over the years, Charlie and I have visited 100′s of schools. This March is Reading Month we have already visited 3 schools with 2 more scheduled today. Real heroes read!

  2. Great show! My class loved it and were really inspired to get back to class and begin writing their own adventures. From the looks of it there are a lot of uncles out there that like to torment their nieces and nephews.

    • Hey, Stefan! Thanks for writing. Glad to hear you and your students enjoyed the show. Love hearing that we’ve inspired kids to write. Our jobs are done and we can fly off to the next school. *WHOOSH* P.S. Thanks for lunch!
